STORY 3: From Bad to Worse (Genesis 3-5)
*Continue the conversation at home reading through Genesis 3, 4 & 5 and going through The Biggest Story Family Devotional that corresponds with Story 3!
Big Picture: Life outside of Eden was not good. Sin was now in the world—people were disobeying God. Genesis 4 shows that sin was everywhere and in everyone. Because of sin, death came into the world too. Even if Adam and Eve wanted to return to the garden of Eden, they couldn’t. Their children had sin enter their hearts-- bad thoughts, mouths full of unkind words, and hands that didn't make great choices. BUT there's good news! The BEST NEWS! God loved us so much that He sent Jesus-- the snake crusher to pay for our sins by dying on the cross! (From The Biggest Story Curriculum)
Big Truth: Sin was everywhere and in everyone.
Memory Verse: Just as sin came into the world through one man [Adam], and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all had sinned. (Romans 5:12)
Extension Activities:
Mosaic Crosses: Each small group was given a wooden cross. They wrote down different sins on the cross. Then, they took spackling to cover those sins like Jesus has done for us. The pieces of mosaic glass were put on top, representing how Jesus makes us truly beautiful taking on our sin and changing our hearts when we choose relationship with Him.
Heart Jars: We filled jars with food coloring, water, oil, glitter and various small items. At first you see the jars settled, then we shook them. Cain let his anger “shake him up” until he exploded. We should let our hearts settle down when we feel angry instead of acting like Cain.
Resources for Parents about Genesis:
Does your child have questions about some of the topics brought up in Genesis? Unsure how to answer those in a way that is age appropriate?
“Christians are counter-cultural: our primary goal should not be to raise intelligent, successful, competent, and upright citizens, our primary concern ought to be for the good of our children's souls - and so for God's glory.
Teaching our children the Scriptures in a compelling, relevant, and holistic manner during daily family worship is one of the chief means we can achieve this. If you need help to do that - this is the series for you! It's a comprehensive guide for the entire family and particularly children between the ages of 5-12.”
Beginning: Family Worship in Genesis By Joel R. Beeke & Nick Thompason is a great additional resource to The Biggest Story Family Devotional, diving deeper into specific questions and reflection throughout Genesis.
The Bible Project overview video on Genesis 1-11, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In Genesis, God makes a good world and commissions humans to rule it, and then they give in to evil and ruin everything.
