STORY 4: Rain, Rain, Go Away (Genesis 6-9)

*Continue the conversation at home reading through Genesis 6-9 and going through The Biggest Story Family Devotional that corresponds with Story 4!

Big Picture: Adam and Eve continued to have children—Seth and many others. Cain too had lots of kids. Now, there were people all over the earth. The only problem was that most people did not love God or each other. This “grieved God to his heart” (see Gen. 6:6). The Bible tells us that “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that . . . his heart was only evil continually. . . . So the Lord said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land . . . for I am sorry that I have made them’” (Gen. 6:5–7). (From The Biggest Story Curriculum)

Big Truth: God sent a flood to judge all the wickedness on earth.

Memory Verse: “Rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.” (Genesis 7:12)

Extension Activities:

Rainbow Plates (“God Keeps His Promises”): Each child created a rainbow on a paper plate with the words, “God Keeps His Promises” on it. The rainbow symbolizes God's grace, mercy, and faithfulness to His promise to Noah and all living creatures to never flood the earth again.

Resources for Parents about Genesis:

Does your child have questions about some of the topics brought up in Genesis? Unsure how to answer those in a way that is age appropriate?

“Christians are counter-cultural: our primary goal should not be to raise intelligent, successful, competent, and upright citizens, our primary concern ought to be for the good of our children's souls - and so for God's glory.

Teaching our children the Scriptures in a compelling, relevant, and holistic manner during daily family worship is one of the chief means we can achieve this. If you need help to do that - this is the series for you! It's a comprehensive guide for the entire family and particularly children between the ages of 5-12.”

Beginning: Family Worship in Genesis By Joel R. Beeke & Nick Thompason is a great additional resource to The Biggest Story Family Devotional, diving deeper into specific questions and reflection throughout Genesis.

The Bible Project overview video on Genesis 1-11, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In Genesis, God makes a good world and commissions humans to rule it, and then they give in to evil and ruin everything.
