STORY 2: A Very Bad Day (Genesis 3)

*Continue the conversation at home reading through Genesis 3 and going through The Biggest Story Family Devotional that corresponds with Story 2!

Big Picture: God placed his very good people in a perfect place (Garden of Eden). There was a special tree in the garden called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The Lord God gave Adam one command: “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Gen. 2:16–17). This tree was off-limits. Adam and Eve disobeyed God. (From The Biggest Story Curriculum)

Big Truth: Sin, suffering, and death came into the world because Adam disobeyed God.

Memory Verse: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

Extension Activities:

Domino Reaction: In small groups, the children built a domino train, then one child knocked the first domino and they watched the rest fall. We talked about how one sin often leads to more sins and impacts many people.

Gift Box Analogy: Sin, like the gift box each group was given can look really good or sound good from the outside, but sin is actually gross like the trash they found on the inside. We all sin, but God has a plan to save us from this sin. (He sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins.) God forgives us of our sin and makes us clean and sinless. They got a cross keychain to take home to help remember God’s grace, love and forgiveness!

Watercolor Mural: Being obedient to God stands out. They thought of ways to obey God and those were written with white crayon on a poster. Then, they used watercolors to showcase the hidden words that were meant to stand out.

Resources for Parents about Genesis:

Do your children have questions about some of the topics brought up in Genesis? Unsure how to answer those in a way that is age appropriate?

“Christians are counter-cultural: our primary goal should not be to raise intelligent, successful, competent, and upright citizens, our primary concern ought to be for the good of our children's souls - and so for God's glory.

Teaching our children the Scriptures in a compelling, relevant, and holistic manner during daily family worship is one of the chief means we can achieve this. If you need help to do that - this is the series for you! It's a comprehensive guide for the entire family and particularly children between the ages of 5-12.”

Beginning: Family Worship in Genesis By Joel R. Beeke & Nick Thompason is a great additional resource to The Biggest Story Family Devotional, diving deeper into specific questions and reflection throughout Genesis.

The Bible Project overview video on Genesis 1-11, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In Genesis, God makes a good world and commissions humans to rule it, and then they give in to evil and ruin everything.
