Story 7: Let’s Make a Deal (Genesis 15; 17)
*Continue the conversation at home reading through Genesis 15 & 17 and going through The Biggest Story Family Devotional that corresponds with Story 7!
Big Picture: “Abraham moved not just from one house to another (or tent, as the case may be) but also from one country to another. Why? Because God asked him to. And because God promised that if he did so, he would bless him. He would give him the promised land. He would give him as many children and grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as the stars in the sky. And through his family he would bless all the families of the earth.
Remember Genesis 12:1–3? “The Lord said to Abram, ‘Go . . . to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you . . . and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ ” What amazing promises! A new people in a new place that would bless all peoples. In this lesson, the story of Abraham continues. “ (From The Biggest Story Curriculum)
Big Truth: God can always be trusted.
Memory Verse: “He [Abraham] believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6)
Extension Activities:
Salvation Bracelets- Each child was sent home with a bracelet. We chose to focus on the concept of salvation today. We talked about how, like Abraham, we are sinners too in need of the saving grace of God! We explored how we can only be made perfectly holy in God’s sight, through believing His promises and receiving the gift of salvation through faith.
Black (Sin): All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Sin separates man from God and leads to death.
Red (Blood of Jesus): God the Father, because of His love for us, sent His son Jesus to save us from the power of sin. God forgives sin through Jesus’ blood by His grace and through faith.
Blue (Baptism): Our sin nature is buried with Christ and we are made alive to God in the resurrection of a new creation in Christ Jesus.
White (Purity): As we walk in the light of God’s word and the Holy Spirit we are continually cleansed by the blood, the Word and the Spirit.
Green (Growth): We need to grow in maturity. We fight in God’s power against temptation, endure persecution, and add moral excellence. We develop in humility and love.
Yellow (Heaven): For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. We shall live in the city of gold.
Resources for Parents about Genesis:
Does your child have questions about some of the topics brought up in Genesis? Unsure how to answer those in a way that is age appropriate?
“Christians are counter-cultural: our primary goal should not be to raise intelligent, successful, competent, and upright citizens, our primary concern ought to be for the good of our children's souls - and so for God's glory.
Teaching our children the Scriptures in a compelling, relevant, and holistic manner during daily family worship is one of the chief means we can achieve this. If you need help to do that - this is the series for you! It's a comprehensive guide for the entire family and particularly children between the ages of 5-12.”
Beginning: Family Worship in Genesis By Joel R. Beeke & Nick Thompason is a great additional resource to The Biggest Story Family Devotional, diving deeper into specific questions and reflection throughout Genesis.
The Bible Project overview video on Genesis 12-50, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In Genesis, God promises to bless rebellious humanity through the family of Abraham, despite their constant failure and folly.
