Story 15: The Way to Stay Free (Exodus 19-20)
*Continue the conversation at home reading through Exodus 19 & 20 and going through The Biggest Story Family Devotional that corresponds with Story 15!
Big Picture: In Egypt God saved his people twice. First, he passed over houses with the lamb’s blood on their doorposts. Second, he opened and closed the Red Sea when they were leaving. God commanded his people to remember this rescue. Once a year the Israelites had a week-long feast called Passover to celebrate what God had done in saving them from slavery and death.
Do you know that just like God commanded the Israelites to remember their rescue, God commands Christians to remember our rescue? When Christians take part in the Lord’s Supper, they celebrate what God has done. By his life and death, Jesus was the perfect Passover Lamb, saving us from slavery to sin and death. Seems like something worth remembering! God’s command to remember is good. But the command to remember wasn’t the only good command God gave.
In Exodus 20 God gave Israel the Ten Commandments. These ten rules show God’s people what it means to serve and worship God. How can a list of rules be good? They not only show us what God is like but also keep his people free—free from the ways of the world, free from the slavery of sin, and free from our own silly, made-up rules. (From The Biggest Story Curriculum)
Big Truth: God gives us his good rules so we can live free lives that reflect Him.
Memory Verse: “ I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt…You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:2-3)
Extension Activities:
10 Commandments Simon Says: The leaders engaged them in a game of Simon Says, at the end reminding students that we should obey God’s commands
Ten Commandments Reader: They read through this take home reader with their group and colored the pictures.
Commandment Bean Bag Toss Game: Commandment cards were layed out on the floor. They took turns tossing a bean bag. Whichever card they landed on, they had to share one way to follow that commandment. The alternate version was to have them share a way to NOT follow that commandment.
Resources for Parents about Exodus:
Does your child have questions about some of the topics brought up in Exodus? Unsure how to answer those in a way that is age appropriate?
Do you need help teaching the Bible in your family? This guide to family worship helps you engage with your children in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The last four books of the Pentateuch pick up where Genesis left off, showing how God faithfully led Israel out of Egypt and dealt with them faithfully during forty years of wilderness wanderings. Use this simple, helpful guide to teach your children how the types and shadows of the Old Testament have pointed God's people of all times to Jesus, the ultimate deliverer of His people.
Wilderness: Family Worship in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy By Joel R. Beeke & Nick Thompson is a great additional resource to The Biggest Story Family Devotional, diving deeper into specific questions and reflection throughout Genesis.
The Bible Project overview video on Exodus 19-40, which breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. In Exodus, God invites the Israelites into a covenant and comes to live among them in the Tabernacle, but Israel rebels and ruins the relationship.
